This page is recommended for advanced users who would like to quickly get the Bluetooth remote software up and running.

If you get stuck you can always refer to the step by step Bluetooth setup instructions available from the Bluetooth Remote setup page.

If you encounter an error during the setup, please have a look on the FAQ page for a possible solution.

1. Requirements

Before you start, please make sure you have all of the requirements listed below:

  • Compatible Bluetooth enabled phone or device
  • Bluetooth hardware available on your PC. This may be built in or provided by a bluetooth dongle. Make sure that you have installed any drivers that are required by your bluetooth hardware.
  • Make sure that your Bluetooth phone or device is paired with your PC. Your device may already be paired if you have previously established a Bluetooth link with your PC for transferring files etc. Pairing usually involves entering a 4 to 10 digit code on your PC and phone.
  • The Vectir application installed on your PC

2. COM Port Setup

The Bluetooth remote client, on your mobile phone or device, communicates with the Bluetooth server over a virtual COM (serial) port. Make sure that your Bluetooth software has a spare COM port available for accepting client connections. Make a note of the COM port name so you can select it later on.

3. Bluetooth Remote Server setup (Computer)

If you have downloaded the latest version of Vectir, the Bluetooth Remote plugin will be included. A setup item called "Bluetooth Remote" should appear under the Hareware category of Vectir's setup panel. Double click on this setup item to open the "Bluetooth Remote Server" dialog.
If the Bluetooth Remote plugin is not installed, please visit the plugin downloads section of the Vectir website to get the latest version of the Bluetooth plugin.
Once you have opend the "Bluetooth Remote Server" dialog, select the COM port from the "COM Port" drop down box that you chose from step 2 above.

4. Bluetooth Remote profile setup

Select the "Profiles" tab of the "Bluetooth Remote Server" dialog. If this is the first time you have run the Bluetoote remote software, there should be two profiles listed under "Remote Profiles". "Media Player menu" is an example of a profile that holds menu commands only. "Media Player" is an example of a profile that holds a profile image and an optional menu. When the profile image is loaded, your phone will send key commands to Vectir when you press keys on your phones keypad. Select each profile and click "Edit" to familiarise yourself with each profile.
If you hare happy to use the default profiles for now, proceed to the next step. If you wish to create your own profiles, click the "Add" button.

5. Bluetooth Remote Client setup (Phone)

Before you attempt to install the BTRemote midlet on your phone, make sure that you have Bluetooth turned on.

You have two options for installing the Bluetooth Remote Midelt onto your device:

  • Over the air from the Vectir WAP site. Enter the following URL into the web browser on your device: www.vectir.com/wap/index.wml. Attempt to download and install from the BTRemote.JAD file. If there was a problem, attempt to install the BTRemote.Jar file directly.
  • Download the Bluetooth Remote Midlet from the hardware plugins download section and install onto your device from your PC. The installation method will vary between devices. Refer to documentation supplied with your device on how to install Java applications.

6. Run the BTRemote Midlet and select the Bluetooth Sever

Run the Bluetooth Remote midlet. After the splash screen has been displayed, the Midlet should start searching for Bluetooth devices in range. You may see the Bluetooth address of each device show up before the actual device name. It is recommended that you wait until the name of each device is displayed. The midlet will remember each device name for subsequent connections.

Select the device that is running the Bluetooth Remote server. The Midlet should now search for all Bluetooth serial port services provided by the server computer.

7. Select the Bluetooth COM port

Note: This step only needs to be performed once. After the Midlet has successfully connected to the server, it will remember the COM port for subsequent connections.

You should now see a list of all Bluetooth serial port services (COM Ports) provided by the server PC. Select the COM port that you chose in step 2 above.

Your phone should now attempt to connect to the Bluetooth server over this COM port. Verify the connection from the "General" tab of the "Bluetooth Remote Server" dialog on your computer.

8. Command setup

The final step is to map commands from your phone to commands in Vectir. You only need to perform this step once.

If your phone has successfully connected to the Bluetooth server, you should now see a list of all profiles provided by the server. Select the profile for which you wish to setup commands. If the profile contains an image, you should now see the profile image displayed on your phones display (there may be a pause of up to 2s if the profile image is quite large). If the profile contains menu commands only, you should now see a list of menu commands on your phones display.

Open the required setup dialog in Vectir. For example, if you wish to control the Winamp application, open the Winamp setup dialog.

Put Vectir into "learn" mode by selecting a command from the setup dialog. The "Event Learn" dialog should load. Map the Vectir command to a command event from your phone by pressing a button on your keypad if you have a profile open with an image OR selecting a menu item if you have a profile open with menu commands only. If the command was successfully mapped, the "Event Saved" dialog should load. Repeat this method for all remaining commands.

When you have mapped all commands, click the "OK" button on the Vectir setup dialog. You are now ready to start controlling your computer with your phone!
