Bluetooth COM Port Setup
< Previous | Start | Next >
The Bluetooth remote client on your mobile phone, communicates with the PC Bluetooth server over a virtual COM (serial) port. You will need to use your Bluetooth software to create a virtual COM port for Vectir to use.
The instructions for viewing or setting up virtual COM ports will vary between different Bluetooth stacks and setup software. The following list of Bluetooth software stacks states if they have been tested or are known to be compatible with Vectir:
- Broadcomm/Widcomm - Tested and compatible
- Toshiba - Tested and compatible
- Microsoft - Tested and compatible (15-Feb-2008)
- BlueSoleil - Untested
Example instructions are provided for the Toshiba, Broadcomm (Widcomm) and Microsoft Bluetooth stacks.
Broadcomm / Widcomm COM port setup
1. Ensure that a Bluetooth server COM port is installed
Load the "Bluetooth Configuration" dialog by right clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray and selecting the "Bluetooth Configuration" option. Select the "Local Services" tab once the dialog has loaded.
By default, there should be one Bluetooth serial port installed. In the example above, COM5 is installed as a Bluetooth serial port and may be used with the Vectir Bluetooth remote software. If there are no serial port services available, proceed to step 3. Otherwise, proceed to step 2.
2. Rename the serial port service
It is recommended to rename the serial COM port service to match the COM port name. This makes life easier later on when identifying the COM port in the Bluetooth remote software. To rename the COM port service, select the "Bluetooth Serial Port" service and click the "Properties" button. On the "Bluetooth Properties" dialog, change the service name to match the port name.
Click OK when you are finished. The "Local Services" tab of the "Bluetooth Configuration" dialog should now show the renamed COM port. This COM port is now ready to be used with the Vectir Bluetooth remote and you may proceed to the next page.
3. Install a new server COM port (only if required)
To install a new server COM port, click the "Add Serial Service" button on the "Local Services" tab of the "Bluetooth Configuration" dialog (See step 1). The "Bluetooth Properties" dialog (see step 2) should load. Change the name of the serial port service to match the COM port name and make sure the "Startup Automatically" option is checked.
Click "OK" to add the COM port. The COM port you created should now be displayed on the "Local Services" tab of the "Bluetooth Configuration" dialog. This COM port is now ready to be used with the Vectir Bluetooth remote.
