Bluetooth COM Port Setup
< Previous | Start | Next >
The Bluetooth remote client on your mobile phone, communicates with the PC Bluetooth server over a virtual COM (serial) port. You will need to use your Bluetooth software to create a virtual COM port for Vectir to use.
The instructions for viewing or setting up virtual COM ports will vary between different Bluetooth stacks and setup software. The following list of Bluetooth software stacks states if they have been tested or are known to be compatible with Vectir:
- Broadcomm/Widcomm - Tested and compatible
- Toshiba - Tested and compatible
- Microsoft - Tested and compatible (15-Feb-2008)
- BlueSoleil - Untested
Example instructions are provided for the Toshiba, Broadcomm (Widcomm) and Microsoft Bluetooth stacks.
Toshiba COM port setup
1. Ensure that the Bluetooth COM Port Service is enabled
Open the Bluetooth "Options" dialog by right clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray and selecting "Options". Or, if the Bluetooth icon is not visible, select Start > All Programs > TOSHIBA > Bluetooth > Bluetooth Settings then select Bluetooth > Options from the dialog that loads.
The "Bluetooth COM Port Service" option should have a tick beside it. See below:
2. Ensure that a Bluetooth server COM port is installed
Open Control Panel and double click on the "Bluetooth Local COM" icon.
The following dialog should now be displayed.
By default, one client COM port and one server COM port are installed. COM6 is the client and COM7 is the server. A server COM port is required by Vectir for accepting connections from a mobile client.
If a server COM port is already available, and no other devices are using it, you may use this port for the Vectir Bluetooth remote. Make a note of the COM port name. In the example above, COM7 could be used by the Vectir Bluetooth remote.
If there are no server COM ports available, follow the instructions listed in the next step to create a new server COM port.
3. How to add a new server COM port
Click the "Add" button on the "Bluetooth Local COM" dialog (see above). The "Bluetooth Local COM Setup Wizard" dialog should load. Select the second option (Create a Bluetooth virtual COM port for a server) then click "Next".
The "Create COM Port for Server (1/2)" dialog should now be displayed. Select a new COM port number and click "Next".
The "Create COM Port for Server (2/2)" dialog should now be displayed. Make a note of the COM port number you have entered, ensure that the Service Profile is set to "Serial Port" then click "Finish" to create the virtual COM port.
The "Bluetooth Local COM" dialog (see step 2) should now show the server COM port that you created. A Bluetooth server COM port is now ready to be used with the Vectir Bluetooth remote.
